Let's Talk About The SCALE
I am sure that there will be some people who are going to read this post and think…OMG I can’t believe she is writing about a scale…she is such a hypocrite…is she actually weighing herself again…does she still have an eating disorder…BLAH BLAH BLAH!
Think what you want and if you don’t want to read further, then please close the page and move on…thank you! For those of you who want to stick around and learn more, well welcome and let us get started. In this post we are going to talk about my personal journey with the scale. We are also going to talk about how just like with fitness, living a healthy lifestyle looks different for EVERYONE! What works for me is probably not going to work for my fiance or my Mom and that is a beautiful thing…so when it comes to deciding what health gadgets to use these days, there is truly something for everyone! From fitness watches, to calorie/macro apps, and yes to scales there is something out there to help you reach your goals, so that you feel your best from the inside out.
The holidays are here and it is that time of year when so many people give up on living a healthy lifestyle! I personally don’t get it…WHY? WHY? WHY? You can still eat good food, enjoy the delicious holiday cocktails, socialize, celebrate, and still do your WORKOUTS and still eat HEALTHY! This vicious cycle drives me absolutely bonkers, because it is not healthy and it is really bad not only for our gut health, but also our minds. BINGE BINGE BINGE…RESTRICT RESTRICT RESTRICT! That is a lot of stress on the mind and body!
My advice to everyone during the holiday season is to have fun and enjoy this beautiful time of year, but don’t give up on all the hard work that you did all year before the holidays. If anything, become a little bit more aware of what you are eating and how you are moving daily. And yes, this can be a great time of year to use your fitness gadgets, and that does include the scale. But let’s cover some other important things, before I talk about this particular scale!
My RELATIONSHIP with the Scale!
YES the scale used to be a crutch for many many years when I was dealing with my eating disorder! I would weigh myself daily and sometimes even a couple of times a day. It was not good, it was not healthy, it was all about control and obsession, but that is an eating disorder. Fast forward to now, I am healthier, happier, and hardly weigh myself anymore, because the scale doesn’t rule me. Do I step on the scale every now and then? ABSOLUTELY? But it doesn’t rule my life and the reason I weigh myself is because once in a while I want to know where I stand. Just like with everything else involving health, wellness, and fitness, it is good to check in. And this structure works for me!
Why the SCALE may be a good fit for YOU!
I truly believe that the scale can be very beneficial for people who are looking to reach certain goals. It could be to lose weight or even gain weight. It is a good tool to have!
When I was a personal trainer, I always weighed my clients and measured them before we started working together. I would also weigh and measure them at the end of each month or when our time together ended. When your GOAL is to lose weight, the scale can be very beneficial in the beginning stages of a weight loss journey. As humans, I believe that we need a schedule and a goal date when it comes to health and fitness. It helps us to stay focused and motivated. And remember it doesn’t need to be complicated, starting your journey really is just about daily movement, healthy eating, and hydrating. Don’t overcomplicate it. Start small and then as you get stronger and healthier, then things can start to get fun…Like signing up for a race, lifting heavier, adding more “healthy calories” to maintain your strength. It’s just the beginning.
I also think that the scale is beneficial for people who are looking to gain weight. If someone has a severe eating disorder or a debilitating disease and weight gain is crucial, a scale is an affordable piece of equipment to make sure you are heading in the right direction. I also have worked with young athletes in high school and college where weight gain is important too, especially as they are training regularly, intensely, lifting heavier, and needing more calories to make sure that they continue to reach their athletic goals. Plus, at that age, their bodies are still growing and developing, so monitoring their weight and caloric intake is crucial. When I played field hockey, at the College of William and Mary, we had to weigh ourselves before and after pre season practices, because it was so humid, we were doing double practice sessions, and they wanted to make sure that we weren’t losing weight.
I feel comfortable NOW writing about the scale after lots of hard work over the past couple of years! And I want to specifically talk about these TWO scales!

Things to note about the scale and how YES it is a great tool for weight loss or weight gain, but they are a PLETHORA of things that can really fluctuate that number, so be mindful and give yourself some grace!
You are well hydrated and you weren’t before;
You’re sodium intake is higher than normal (hello holiday foods);
You’ve eaten more carbohydrates than usual (again…hello holiday foods);
You ate a big meal the night before and it was later than usual;
You didn’t have a bowel movement;
You are about to get your period!
This was a lot of information to cover in this post about the SCALE and I just want you to remember that you have to do what is right for YOU! If the scale isn’t your cup of tea, that is okay. If you need the scale to hold you accountable, that is okay too. My point with all of this is that I want YOU to feel your best from the inside out. The best way to do that is through eating well and moving your body daily. Being healthy and working out daily is not easy and honestly it can be really uncomfortable and HARD, but I do it, because I love the way I feel. I love the way I look. And health is wealth these days and I want to live a long healthy and badass life!
xoxo
