4 THINGS I THINK ABOUT WHEN I RUN

As y’all know, I love to RUN! I love to talk about my running adventures, my running schedule, my running goals, how I fuel for my runs, and how I incorporate yoga and strength training into my runs. I look forward to writing more about these topics and sharing with you tips, videos, and inspiration.

4 THINGS I THINK ABOUT WHEN I RUN

But let’s start with something more whimsical, like what exactly goes through my mind while I am hitting the pavement. Is it a random question? Not really, as I get asked it a lot and I find it fascinating what other athletes think about when they are training. We are all different and have different goals and training schedules, but finding what makes people tick and what keeps them motivated is really fascinating.

Random Note #1 – When I do my runs on the treadmill, I do not have these same thoughts, as I am just all about the workout…pushing myself…building strength…and yes just getting it done. Treadmills are not my choice of training, but when the weather is crap and you need to work on sprints, intervals, and hills, I opt for the treadmill. There are ZIP ZERO hills in Charleston!

Random Note #2 – I am a Pisces. I dream BIG. I am emotional, artistic, and intuitive. So when you read about my running thoughts, they are very relatable to my sign and who I truly am. Running is when I let myself DREAM!

4 THINGS I THINK ABOUT WHEN I RUN

1. LOVE – MY RELATIONSHIPS – This is probably the topic that I think about the most. I am obviously in a much different place than I was almost two years ago. I am no longer single and I am head over heels for someone. I spend a lot of time with this person and I would not have it any other way. He is very special to me and I am grateful that we met. That he is in my life. The things that he does for me on a daily basis. Oh geez, I could ramble on and on about this, but that story is for another time and post.

Those above thoughts…They go through my mind when I run! I daydream about the first time we met…The first date…The first kiss…The honeymoon stage…All of our trips. They make me smile when I run, so why wouldn’t I think about these things. I also have thoughts about the times we struggle, because as y’all know, no relationship is perfect. We have our moments. We have our disagreements. It’s called life. So YES, these thoughts also go through my mind.

How can I be a better partner?

Am I opening myself up to this person 100%?

Am I holding back with my thoughts, frustrations, opinions?

What am I afraid of?

There is no other place I would rather have these thoughts than on the open road. It’s the perfect place for me to just let it out. To figure it out. And then work through it, when I am ready.

4 THINGS I THINK ABOUT WHEN I RUN

2. HOW CAN I BE THE BEST VERSION OF ME – I am all about self-care and taking care of myself. It is important to be selfish when it comes to YOU. When we take care of ourselves emotionally, physically, and nutritionally we are a happier human. When we are a happier human, we give off good energy and attract good people and good opportunities.

Running is ME time. I like to run alone. I like to take that time to disconnect from the world, work, relationships, and focus on my thoughts, my body, my mind, and the good and the not so good. And just like with love and my relationships I think about topics like:

How can I better nourish my body when it comes to training?

How can I be more available to my friends?

How can I practice more self-love?

What holds me back from being 100% FEARLESS?

3. BUSINESS GOALS – I try not to let this topic take up too much of my running time, as it is probably the most stressful. I can be a worrier and I am scared shitless that I won't be successful. But I am beyond grateful to be working with an amazing woman; to have a support system that spreads across this country; to work with brands and influencers who are just BAD ASS!

I do notice that once I do start thinking about work, my running steps can get a little bit heavier and I probably start to scrunch up my face more, and the overall run just doesn’t seem as fun. It becomes more like work...HA! But business goals are part of life. It is my income. It is how I pay the bills and for all that food to fuel this body. So it is a hard topic to avoid.

4. NOTHING – My absolute favorite!!! It is that moment for me when I honestly forget that I was running. It is silent. My thoughts are silent. I am in the moment. I am in the zone. I am flying. It is that runner’s high and then POOF it is gone. For me, thinking about nothing typically lasts no longer than 5 minutes, but it is PURE BLISS and that feeling is why I continue to run. I live for that NOTHING moment.

What do you think about when you run?

What thoughts help you run fearless?

MY FAVORITE YOGA POSES TO STRETCH YOUR HAMSTRINGS

Running...Strength Training...Sitting for long periods of time...and overall inflexibility causes tight hamstrings. The hamstrings NEVER lie and these big ass muscles are VERY crucial for our daily movements, so it is important to make sure that you to take the time to stretch them.

MY FAVORITE YOGA POSES TO STRETCH YOUR HAMSTRINGS

Let’s be real and state the obvious, that many of us do not take the time to stretch. I will be the first to admit this and I have admitted it MANY times. That is why I make time to incorporate yoga into my training schedule EVERY week. It honestly the only way that I can disconnect...slow down...breathe deeply...let shit go...and yes STRETCH.

If you cannot make it to a yoga class, then I highly recommend you take some time after your workout or your long day of work to do as many of these poses as your schedule allows. Grab your mat; put on some music; get in the zone to stretch. I promise you will feel better...Pinky swear!

Some tips to remember:

  1. Hold each pose for up to 1-minute;
  2. Try to do each pose 2 - 3 times;
  3. Listen to your body...Remember to breathe...And take your time with getting into the pose and holding the pose...Do not get frustrated...Enjoy and embrace the pose!
  4. Use props if are unable to touch the ground in certain poses. Yoga blocks can be your best friend!

Pyramid Pose:

  1. Make sure that your front foot is aligned with your back arch;
  2. Square your hips to the ground;
  3. Reach for the ground and allow your upper body to fall over your front knee;
  4. Fold forward as much as your body will allow you and HOLD!

Head to Knee Forward Bend:

  1. Bring one foot into your groin, while the other goes straight in front;
  2. Keep the front leg straight and reach for your foot;
  3. As you reach as far as your body will allow you, let your head relax and fall off the straight leg;
  4. I like to cross my wrists and pull myself towards my foot to get real deep into the hamstring;
  5. Hold, breathe, and try to relax!

Big Toe Pose: L O V E this one!!!

  1. Stand straight up with your feet hip-width distance apart;
  2. Slowly fold forward and grab your big toes with your thumbs and peace fingers;
  3. Pull your toes toward your face; bend your elbows to the side; and bring your chest towards thighs as far as your body will allow you;
  4. This pose will let you know how tight those hamstrings are, so be patient with your body and this pose...Remember to breathe and move into it slowly!

Triangle Pose:

  1. If there is one pose you should do every day...this is THE ONE! It is one of my favorites for stretching my hamstrings; opening my heart and shoulders; improving and strengthening both my balance and core. YEP, it works all that stuff!
  2. Make sure your front foot aligns with your back arch and your feet are spread wide. An easy way to get into this posture is from Warrior II;
  3. Slowly hinge your body forward and bring your front hand as close to the ground as possible;
  4. Keep your hips and chest open and facing forward;
  5. Keep your legs and core engaged...Do not get lazy in this pose...Feel that hamstring burn;
  6. You can use a block for support if you cannot reach the ground and you can grab your big toe for a different variation.

Reclining Hand to Big Toe Pose:

  1. Lay on your back and take a moment to breathe and enjoy that time laying down;
  2. If you don’t have a yoga strap, you can always use a towel, jump rope, etc.;
  3. Keep your spine glued to the mat; one leg straight and on the ground; and bring the opposite leg up. If you cannot grab your foot, use your prop.
  4. Try to keep the lifted leg as straight as possible, while slowly bringing closer to your nose;
  5. Hold...breathe...let your body settle into the stretch!

Let me know which ones you start adding to your daily stretching sessions...Like I said up above, make the time to take care of your body. Whether it is five minutes or 30 minutes, a little self-care goes a long way both physically and mentally.

Embrace the hamstring BURN and just do it!

It Was A Good Birthday!

38...How did that happen? Where did the year go? It disappeared is what it did and now it is time to move onto 38. 2 years away from 4-0...what the heck? I am not getting any younger. Life is flying by. And it is time to just do it. Live it. Experience it. Make it happen. Aggressive...Definitely! But I woke up on Wednesday morning feeling energized, refreshed, excited, and ready for the day and the year. I have not felt this in a while. Okay a really long time! I have felt a shift. I can sense a change. I can feel changes in me. Bring it ON!

Birthday LOVE

Birthday Runs are NOT Always Fun - Typically I work out first thing in the morning, but I had errands to run and meetings to attend, so my birthday run was going to have to be later in the day. I was debating taking the day off, but I am stubborn and I wanted to tackle the run because it was beautiful out and I wanted to prove to my old body I could do it. Needless to say, that run kicked my butt. No watch and no music, it was a mental run with heavy legs, but I did it. And in the end, I am glad I did it, because I had to make room for that cherry pie and vanilla ice cream.

Birthday Run

Breakfast Bowls are MUCH Better with Oats - As of lately, I have been loving adding Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oatmeal to my smoothies and yogurt bowls for added texture and added carbs. With the temperatures "sort of" warming up and adding more outdoor running to my training and itching to sign up for half marathons, this body needs more carbs! For so long, I never used to have them early in the day, but my training is changing, my nutritional goals are changing, and honestly it's time to kick those stupid "food rules" out the door this year!

Birthday Breakfast Bowl

Celebrating with Family Means the WOLRD to Me - Nothing beats waking up on your birthday and having Mom coming down the stairs singing "Happy Birthday"! It happens every year and she does it for all of the kids and it is the best. We had a delicious dinner out and then celebrated at home with cherry pie and vanilla ice cream. It was just what I wanted. A lot of food...A very full belly...And being surrounded by loved ones is PERFECTION! No food pictures of that feast, because sometimes you just need to leave that device at home and share those moments with real talk. I will just tell you that I was in a food coma and went to bed with a VERY VERY full belly. Totally overdid it...whatever!

Biggest Lesson That I Learned - I spent a lot of time over the past years always asking for people's opinions, hoping that they could give me direction and help me make those difficult decisions that I could not do on my own. Something clicked over the past couple of months. I stopped asking and I started doing. Doing what I wanted to do. It was a HUGE shift. And it is something I am going to continue to do this coming year. I can feel a new energy. I can feel a change in my confidence, my body, my outlook on dating, and how I am tackling my business. Living and learning friends and when you feel a monumental shift like this, to me it means only good things are to come! AMEN!

Thank you to everyone who reached out to me on Wednesday! It means a lot to me and I appreciate all your love, support, and kind words! Cheers to being 38 and to a new year of endless possibilities, adventures, and new beginnings! XOXO
